Beryl Travel Router โ€” Reference & Troubleshooting

Quick Facts

Travel SSID
SpoiledBoxers
Password
in 1Password
Admin UI
http://192.168.8.1
Admin pw
in 1Password
Tailscale name
beryl-travel
Tailscale IP
100.120.21.98
Exit node
M4 (100.68.53.7 โ€” home)

Physical Switch

LEFT (near reset)
WiFi OFF
RIGHT
SpoiledBoxers ON
Cycle time
~30 sec

โš ๏ธ At home: always keep LEFT. Prevents SpoiledBoxers broadcast collision with your Eero.

๐Ÿจ Hotel Arrival Setup (~5 min)

  1. Keep switch LEFT. Plug in Beryl.
  2. Connect your Air to Beryl (ethernet in LAN port, or the Beryl's current default WiFi โ€” sticker on back).
  3. Open http://192.168.8.1 โ†’ Internet โ†’ Repeater.
  4. Scan for hotel WiFi โ†’ connect with hotel's credentials.
  5. Captive portal? Disconnect your device from Beryl, connect directly to hotel WiFi, sign in, then reconnect to Beryl and retry step 4.
  6. Upstream shows "Connected"? Flip switch RIGHT. Wait ~30 sec.
  7. Connect all your travel devices to SpoiledBoxers โ€” they'll auto-connect since they remember the password from home. Traffic egresses from your home IP via M4.

๐Ÿ”ง Troubleshooting

SpoiledBoxers doesn't appear after flipping switch RIGHT

Wait a full 45 seconds โ€” MTK driver is slow on channel negotiation.

Still not showing? Flip switch LEFT, wait 30s, flip RIGHT again.

Last resort: power cycle the Beryl (unplug 10s, replug). Switch position is remembered.

SpoiledBoxers visible but no internet

Beryl isn't connected to the hotel WiFi upstream.

Admin UI โ†’ Internet โ†’ Repeater โ†’ reconnect hotel network.

Hotel rotated session or changed password? Re-run repeater setup.

New captive portal? Disconnect Beryl's upstream, sign in directly from your phone, reconnect Beryl.

Public IP shows hotel location (Netflix/bank geo-flagged you)

Tailscale exit node isn't routing. Visit https://ifconfig.me on your device โ€” if that shows Vegas instead of home, exit node is broken.

SSH to Beryl from any Tailscale device: ssh root@beryl-travel

Check status: tailscale status โ€” should show M4 as active exit node.

If not, re-apply: tailscale up --exit-node=100.68.53.7 --exit-node-allow-lan-access=true --ssh=true --hostname=beryl-travel

Can't SSH to beryl-travel over Tailscale

Beryl probably has no upstream internet, so Tailscale can't phone home.

Fall back to direct-LAN: admin UI shows Beryl's current LAN IP. SSH there as root.

Or connect your Air via ethernet to Beryl's LAN port, then ssh [email protected].

Only 2.4GHz works, no 5GHz band broadcasting

Normal โ€” if the hotel's WiFi is on 5GHz, Beryl's 5GHz radio is taken by the upstream-client role and can't simultaneously run as AP. 2.4GHz is fine for a hotel room.

To force 5GHz AP: in admin UI โ†’ Internet โ†’ Repeater, pick a 2.4GHz hotel SSID instead. Frees the 5GHz radio.

Weird SSIDs like HT_AP1 or MTK_CHEETAH_AP nearby

MediaTek driver artifacts from the Beryl itself. Cosmetic, no device will connect to them. Ignore.

โ˜ข๏ธ NUCLEAR: factory reset (last resort)

Hold reset button (next to switch) for 10 full seconds until LEDs flash. This WIPES all Aria's config: Tailscale auth, SpoiledBoxers SSID, custom switch handler, everything.

Only if truly unrecoverable. You'll reconfigure from scratch with Aria when home. Full config lives at memory/drawers/travel/project_beryl_travel_router.md.

๐Ÿค– Stuck? Get Aria on the line

If Claude Code is on your Air, open it โ€” Aria loads with full context. If you only have the Claude mobile app / web browser (no local repo), paste this prompt for a one-off help session:

You are Aria, Topher's chief of staff. He's traveling and his Beryl travel router has an issue: [DESCRIBE PROBLEM]. Context: Beryl is a GL-MT3000 on his tailnet as "beryl-travel" (100.120.21.98). Exit node is M4 at home (100.68.53.7). Travel SSID is SpoiledBoxers, WPA2, password in his 1Password. Physical switch: RIGHT = WiFi ON, LEFT = OFF. Admin UI at http://192.168.8.1, admin password in his 1Password. Walk him through debugging step by step.
