We rebuilt the way every client website gets published so that only finished, saved work can ever go live — and so we keep three safe backups of everything.

🖼️ The easiest way to picture it: a school art project

Before, publishing a website was like the teacher walking by your desk, grabbing whatever picture was sitting there that second — even a half-painted one, or one with an eraser hole you hadn't fixed yet — and hanging it on the wall for the whole school to see. Most days the picture happened to be fine. But one day it isn't, and your unfinished mess is on the wall.

Now, there's a simple rule: the only picture that can go on the wall is one you've officially turned in to the "finished" tray. If it's not in the tray, it cannot go on the wall — there's no way to do it by accident. You can scribble and experiment all you want at your desk; none of that can sneak onto the wall.

Work moves forward one room at a time — you hand it forward on purpose. Nothing jumps straight from the messy desk to the front lobby.

😬 Before

  • Publishing grabbed whatever files were sitting on the computer — saved or not.
  • A half-finished edit could go live by accident.
  • Deleted things could vanish from the live site without anyone noticing.
  • It worked… right up until the day it didn't (that's what started this).

✅ Now

  • A site can ONLY go live from work you've officially saved ("committed").
  • If it isn't saved, it literally cannot be published. Full stop.
  • Every version is automatically copied to 3 safe places.
  • Going live is a calm, on-purpose step — never an accident.

💾 Three copies of everything (so we never lose work)

Like keeping your homework on your computer, on a flash drive, and emailed to yourself. If one breaks, the other two have you covered.

1. GitHub

The main copy, kept in the cloud. This is the official home.

2. The NAS at home (Gitea)

A second copy on your own machine at the house, refreshed every hour.

3. Nightly bundle

A third copy, zipped up and tucked away automatically every night at 3 AM.

During this project we found the home copy was missing the newest sites and fixed it — now all three copies hold every site.

🧭 Why this matters for where we're headed

The whole point is to be able to grow to 100 clients without the wheels coming off. A mistake that's a small headache with 12 clients becomes a disaster with 100. This change makes the dangerous kind of mistake — accidentally publishing unfinished or broken work — basically impossible. It's the difference between a hobby and a real, scalable business.
